KUALA LUMPUR: AmBank (M) Bhd has become the first bank in the country to implement a wireless network of ATMs using global system for mobile communications (GSM) protocol.

In a statement yesterday, the bank said it had broken away from the traditional fixed leased lines and started using secured wireless connectivity (SWC) that utilised existing wireless signals like 3G, provided by Celcom and DiGi.

Currently, AmBank has 758 ATMs nationwide, of which 351 are in 7-Eleven outlets.

“Besides being free from physical leased line restrictions, SWC connects AmBank’s machines and systems across the country with ease, flexibility and speed,” it said.

AmBank retail banking managing director Datuk Mohamed Azmi Mahmood said: “The many benefits of wire-free networking include faster and easier installation that will allow AmBank to deploy more ATMs within a shorter time period.”

He said it would also be  easier to relocate ATMs to high-traffic locations where there was insufficient fixed line infrastructure.

In the statement, Teoh Eng Kee of EKTECH, the vendor implementing the system, said: “Operating cost is expected to be lower than the equivalent fixed leased lines.”

AmBank said the SWC also provided multi-telco redundancy, meaning if one system was down, the other system automatically kicked in.
