Paint Brushes are far and away the most used tools of the professional painter. Paint Brushes provide a smooth finish, are comfortable to hold, easy to clean, use the least amount of paint. There are three general types of Paint Brushes – those made with Natural Bristles, made of animal hair; those made with Synthetic Fibers, usually made of nylon or polyester; and those made with a synthesis of both Natural Bristles and Synthetic Fibers.

At one time, the Natural Bristles were considered the best, but today the Synthetic Fibers are every bit as good. Beside, you can’t use a Natural Bristles Brush with water-based paints because Natural Bristles are hollow and can absorb up to 40% of their weight in water, causing them to become limp and difficult to use.

Use only Synthetic Fibers Brushes when applying any type of water-based coating. Synthetic Fibers Brushes hold their shape and maintain proper stiffness regardless of the amount of water to which they are exposed. Be aware, however, that some brushes are available with Synthetic Fibers that are hollow and designed to act like Natural Bristles. Many Synthetic Fibers Brushes also work well with oil-based paints, although it is always wise to check the brush manufacturer’s usage instructions.

Before you start your painting work, you need to select the type of paint (oil-based or water-based) you want for protecting and beautifying. Paint Brushes are made in a wide variety of sizes, from the smallest 1/2" to 4". You probably need to two brushes for every painting works. Small one for painting trim or narrow surfaces and a large one got covering surfaces quickly.

Brushes between 1/2" to 2" wide are excellent for precise painting of door and window frames, trim, touch-ups or narrow surfaces. A 2-1/2" brush is best for cutting in corners, and 3" to 4" for covering surfaces quickly such as interior walls and ceilings, side panelling, exterior siding, etc.
