The New Beijing CCTV Building is located in the Chaoyang CBD District. It consists of two main towers that are linked together with cantilever structures. The two towers have 52 floors and 44 floors each at a height of 234m and 194m, respectively. The building has a total floor area of 550,000 m2 and is being called the No. 1 Public Building of China.
The suspended arms of the two cantilever steel structures span a distance of 75.165m and 67.165m, respectively, from the base of the towers at a height of 162m, resulting in a half-cross, gate-like structure. The suspended portion of the cantilever was constructed from 18,000 tons of steel and consisted of 14 floors at 39.1m wide and 56m high.
The new CCTV building was given the awards of "Top 10 Chinese New Construction Miracles" by the US Business Week magazine and "Global Top 10 Toughest Construction Projects" by the UK Times newspaper. It was also listed in China's "Classical Architectural Works" and was named one of the "World's Top 10 Construction Miracles in 2007" by the US Times magazine.
Considering the construction scale and difficulty, its strict requirements on power supply safety, quality and reliability, and its status as the national TV broadcasting station at the country's capital, this project imposed upon its suppliers extremely high requirements for their aptitude, technical capability, and engineering experience.
In 2006, CET emerged as the successful bidder, among well known domestic and international rivals, for the design, implementation and commissioning of the New Beijing CCTV Building's Intelligent Power Management System.
The new CCTV building has one 110kV/10kV main substation and thirty three 10kV/400V distribution substations. CET's EnerSys System is responsible for monitoring in excess of 3,000 electrical circuits of different voltage levels. Because of the use of specialized broadcasting equipment at CCTV, sophisticated, advanced monitoring instruments capable of performing 512 samples per cycle were deployed to allow for harmonics analysis up to the 255th order, power quality monitoring for voltage fluctuations and waveform recording. In addition, EnerSys provided a unified interface by integrating other 3rd party systems and devices such as BAS, UPS, EPS, and Diesel power generators. At the time of its completion, the EnerSys System at the New Beijing CCTV Building was the country's most complex intelligent power management project with the highest integration density as well as the longest commissioning time.
